Microsoft: A Love Hate Relationship

WindersIs it possible to love Microsoft? Everybody sure loves bashing on them, complaining about how terrible Windows is, how they are never innovative, how their monopoly allows them to walk all over their customers, how Microsoft is becoming Big Brother, and the list goes on and on and on. Wait, are those complaints coming from the same people who rave about how good the Halo series is, or about how revolutionary the XBox 360 is? Fortunately I don’t like either, so I feel that am perfectly okay to criticize the company, aside from my dependence on their operating system. Despite my best efforts, I still find a few things to love about this hegemon.

ReadyBoost

You have to admit, the ready boost idea was genious, especially since I just happened to have a 4GB USB stick laying around. Is this evidence that Microsoft can read minds? I sure hope so, because then they would begin production on robotic chickens. I’ve always wanted one, and I am quite sure that the market is there for it. Can you honestly find somebody who wouldn’t love to have a robotic chicken?

But I digress. ReadyBoost is for Windows what steroids are for Barry Bonds. I’ve checked, my computers balls have definitely shrunk since I started using ReadyBoost. Or maybe its due to the fact that my girlfriend watched The Notebook on it. Twice.

Native Widgets

Dumb ClocksFinally, we are independent of that konfabulating widget system. Those people at Yahoo! have no right to try and control our desktops with utterly useless… things! Take back your desktop and clutter it up with different pretty yet still useless things. Seriously though, what is up with everybody making clocks as a widget? Maybe a clock is in the Taskbar for a reason.

DirectX 10

While all you pansies on OS X, Linux, and XP will be playing around with OpenGL and other lame graphics, I will be enjoying cutting edge technology and high quality video display and gaming like you can’t even imagine. Never before has everything looked so realistic (that is perhaps the dumbest statement I have ever seen anywhere. Really? Perhaps that is the point of developing better graphic cards…)

Whats this? Why is my computer lagging?

Microsoft’s Own Imcompetence

Believe it or not, some of the reasons that others absolutely hate Microsoft are the very reasons that I love our friends in Redmond. Every strike against them is a bonus towards other companies. For example, since Microsoft still can’t seem to get Internet Explorer right, many people are switching to other browsers. Check out these browser stats from W3Schools.com. Opera and Firefox are on the rise, IE6 is on the decline, and we can see that Microsoft is forcing people to switch to IE7 (probably against their will).

Recently I dual booted my computer with both XP and Vista. Since my computer came with Vista all I needed was an XP boot disk. I borrowed one from my friend (hey, I did buy XP once before, like 6 years ago, why should I buy it again?) and installed with no problem. I went to the Windows Update page, and it told me that my copy was not genuine. No problem, XP’s built in update downloading program got the updates anyway! Good thing Microsoft forget to make that program check the validity of my XP copy. Thank you for allowing pirates to make easy work of your OS, Microsoft!

Conclusion

Wow, that is a pretty short list. I suppose there really isn’t that much to love about Microsoft. Hopefully software developers will look more at Linux distros so that we can all say goodbye to Microsoft forever and stupid lists like this one won’t show up on the internet, and so I don’t have to continue to listent to people whine about how much Microsoft sucks. Those forum junkies really do get on my nerves.

  • The biggest reason to take Linux over MS is that with MS you’re really only leasing your computer, in accordance with the EULA.
